What ground wire means
The ground wire, or equipment grounding conductor, connects metal parts of equipment and boxes back to the panel so a fault trips the breaker instead of energizing the metal.
Also called equipment grounding conductor, EGC.
Where it matters on a electrical job
Old two wire systems have no equipment ground, and swapping in three prong outlets without one is a common inspection finding. A GFCI with the right label is one code allowed fix; rewiring is the other. Give both prices.
What the model code says
- The code calls for an intentionally built, low-impedance path to carry fault current back to the source so the overcurrent device operates. (IRC 2021, Chapter 35)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for ground wire before you quote.
What it costs
The rewiring a house cost guide has the typical job at $9,150 and the usual range at $6,650 to $11,500. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
