What greenboard means
Greenboard is moisture resistant drywall with a green paper face, used in bathrooms and other damp rooms, though not as a tile backer in wet areas like showers.
Also called moisture-resistant drywall.
Where it matters on a drywall job
Using greenboard behind shower tile is an old shortcut that leads to rot. For wet areas, cement board or a foam or fabric membrane system is the right quote.
What the model code says
- Water-resistant gypsum board may not be installed over a Class I or II vapor retarder in a shower or tub compartment. (IRC 2021, Chapter 7)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for greenboard before you quote.
