What Type X drywall means
Type X drywall has glass fibers in the gypsum core so it holds together longer in a fire. It is used in fire rated walls and ceilings.
Also called fire-rated drywall, firecode.
Where it matters on a drywall job
Garage walls and ceilings next to living space often need it, especially under bedrooms. Use the thickness and type on the plans; inspectors check the stamp on the back of the sheets.
What the model code says
- Habitable rooms above a garage need at least 5/8-inch Type X gypsum board or equivalent on the garage ceiling. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
