What deck guard means
A guard is the railing system along the open sides of a deck, porch or stair that keeps people from falling off.
Also called guardrail, deck railing.
Where it matters on a deck job
Railing is often a big share of deck cost, especially with metal or glass. Price it by the linear foot by system, and check the post attachment, which is where guards fail.
What the model code says
- Required guards are at least 36 inches tall. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
- Guards may not have openings that let a 4 inch sphere pass. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for deck guard before you quote.
What it costs
Jobs that involve deck guard are priced in the deck building cost guide: about $11,000 typical, usually $6,650 to $16,500. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price. The deck cost calculator prices a job line by line.
