What handrail means
A handrail is the rail you hold while going up or down stairs, separate from the guard that keeps you from falling off an open side.
Where it matters on a carpentry job
Handrail height and grip size are inspected. Remodels that move or replace stair parts need a handrail that meets the current rule, which is easy to miss in the quote.
What the model code says
- Handrail height is not less than 34 inches and not more than 38 inches, measured from the nosing line. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for handrail before you quote.
What it costs
Jobs that involve handrail are priced in the staircase remodel cost guide: about $2,800 typical, usually $1,500 to $4,100. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
