What stair rise and run means
Rise is the height of each step and run, or tread depth, is its depth. Together they set how steep and comfortable a stair is.
Also called riser, tread, rise and run.
Where it matters on a carpentry job
Stair layout is unforgiving: the total height divided into equal risers decides everything. Uneven risers are a trip hazard and an inspection fail, so measure the finished floor heights, not the subfloor.
What the model code says
- Riser height may not be more than 7 3/4 inches. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
- Tread depth may not be less than 10 inches. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
- Within a flight, the tallest riser may not exceed the shortest by more than 3/8 inch. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for stair rise and run before you quote.
What it costs
