Every welding business needs a steady flow of new customers. Some of that flow can be bought by the lead, from Google, Angi, Thumbtack and others. Some of it you can build so it keeps coming without a fee per job: reviews, your own site, the neighbors of every job and the people who refer you. This page sorts the two for welding, using each platform's own pages for the rules.
- Welding and Fabrication is not named on Google's Local Services list as we read it.
- Shared lead sites charge for the introduction, not the job. Measure them by cost per welding job won.
- Answering fast matters most when the call is a broken trailer, hitch or piece of equipment that has to work tomorrow; a missed call can still be a charged lead on Google.
- Owned leads, like reviews, a price on your site and photos of finished work, keep working after you stop paying.
Where welding leads come from
Each row is a place welding leads come from, how it charges and our read on the fit for welders and fabricators.
| Source | Own or rent | How you pay | Fit for welders and fabricators |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile and reviews | Own | Free | Where most people looking for welding start. Reviews that mention welding repair and the town do the selling. |
| Your own site with a price | Own | Free on a Koira address | A Get a price button answers the first question about a small repair on a trailer or a piece of equipment at any hour. |
| Past customers and referrals | Own | A text, an email, a thank-you | Powder coaters and past customers send the warmest leads you will get. |
| Neighbor postcards | Own | Per card | Cards go to the homes around a job at a customer's address, so they fit the on-site work only: a new gate or railing you built and installed at the customer's house. Parts dropped off at the shop have no street to mail. |
| Google Local Services Ads | Rent | Per lead | Welding and Fabrication is not named on Google's eligible list as we read it. |
| Angi and HomeAdvisor | Rent | Per match, win or lose | A job like a custom gate, a staircase railing or a fabrication job from a drawing can carry a few lead fees that go nowhere; a small repair on a trailer or a piece of equipment cannot. |
| Thumbtack and Bark | Rent | Budget or credits | Customers often contact several welders and fabricators. The first clear price wins most of them. |
| Writing to commercial buyers | Own | Time, or Koira Front Office | One contract with contractors can replace dozens of one-time leads. |
All lead sources compared lists each platform's published prices next to Koira's, with the same columns.
Google Local Services Ads for welders and fabricators
Welding and Fabrication is not named on Google's list of Local Services categories as we read it on Google's own pages. Check the list for the category closest to your work before you plan on it. If none fits your welding repair, the money is better spent on what Google ranks for free. Google's own help page names three things behind local results: relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how close you are to the person searching) and prominence, which it also calls popularity (how well known the business is).

When welding leads come in
Lead volume follows the season. For welders and fabricators it peaks around spring and early summer, when trailers, gates and equipment come back out and drops in the holiday weeks, which changes what a paid lead is worth from month to month.
| Month | Pace | What customers want |
|---|---|---|
| February | Get ready | Trailers before spring |
| March | Busy | Trailers, hitches and gates |
| April | Busy | Farm and contractor equipment |
| May | Busy | Railings, gates and trailers |
| September | Get ready | Fall projects |
Expect homeowners with a gate, railing or trailer to fix or build, farmers and contractors with broken equipment, and small businesses with parts to make, who want a price and a date, along with contractors, farms, property managers and small manufacturers and referrals from powder coaters, fence companies, general contractors, farm supply stores and machine shops.
Shared lead sites and welding
Angi's 2025 annual report says pros pay lead fees for consumer matches whether or not they end up doing the job. On Bark, the credits needed to contact a customer depend on the service, the value of the job and local supply and demand.
Thumbtack says joining is free, with no annual or membership fees. Thumbtack lets you control your lead budget, which sets your lead volume, but it does not list lead prices on its pro page.
What decides shared welding leads is speed. Your customers are homeowners with a gate, railing or trailer to fix or build, farmers and contractors with broken equipment, and small businesses with parts to make, who want a price and a date. If you reply hours later, you paid for an introduction to a customer who already booked someone else. Thumbtack vs Angi puts the two biggest side by side.
Cost per lead vs cost per welding job
Ignore the price per lead for a moment and look at the price per booked job: a month's spend divided by the jobs that source actually produced. Then compare it with what you keep on a small repair on a trailer or a piece of equipment or a custom gate, a staircase railing or a fabrication job from a drawing. If the booked job costs more than it leaves you, the source is losing money however busy it feels.
Run your own numbers through the free cost per lead calculator; it also shows the close rate where a source breaks even. The missed call calculator shows what calls that go to voicemail cost you before any lead fee.
Leads you own for welders and fabricators
- Reviews. Ask everyone, right after they pay, with a link straight to the review form. Google strictly prohibits offering incentives such as free or discounted goods or services for reviews. Koira's review engine sends the ask and drafts each reply.
- A price on your site. A small repair on a trailer or a piece of equipment priced from your own list, day or night, with booking on the same page (instant quotes).
- Photos of finished work. Each finished piece, with the material and the finish named, on your profile and your site. Your Koira site adds a recent work section from your finished jobs.
- Referrals. From happy customers and from powder coaters, fence companies, general contractors, farm supply stores and machine shops (referrals).
- Seasonal reminders. A note to past customers before spring and early summer, when trailers, gates and equipment come back out (campaigns).
- Commercial buyers. Three short emails to contractors, farms, property managers and small manufacturers near you, then stop (commercial outreach).
Whoever answers first
On a call about a broken trailer, hitch or piece of equipment that has to work tomorrow, the customer rings down the list until someone picks up. It does not matter whether the lead came free or cost you a fee. Koira's receptionist answers on your number and texts missed callers back in about a minute with three open times for a small repair on a trailer or a piece of equipment or a look at a custom gate, a staircase railing or a fabrication job from a drawing. Koira Grow is $249 a month plus usage at cost: texts, call minutes and emails with nothing added. See the welding answering service guide for live and AI options and their published prices.
