What drainfield means
The drainfield is the network of perforated pipes or chambers in gravel or soil where septic effluent soaks into the ground and is treated by the soil.
Also called leach field, soil absorption field.
Where it matters on a septic job
A failing drainfield is the expensive end of septic work. Soggy ground, odors and slow drains point to it. Driving or building over the field ruins it, so tell owners where it is.
