What counter flashing means
Counter flashing is the upper piece of a paired flashing. It is set into a masonry joint or behind siding and folds down over the base flashing, so the roof and the wall can move without opening a gap.
Also called cap flashing, counterflashing.
Where it matters on a roofing job
Chimneys are the usual place you meet it. If the counter flashing is just caulked to the brick face, it will leak again. Grinding a reglet and setting it in the mortar joint takes longer, so price it as real work and tell the homeowner why it lasts.
What it costs
The chimney repair cost guide has the typical job at $600 and the usual range at $210 to $980. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
