What water heater drain pan means
A drain pan is a shallow pan under a tank water heater that catches leaks and drains them away.
Also called drip pan.
Where it matters on a plumbing job
Heaters in attics, closets and upstairs need a pan where a leak would cause damage. Include the pan and its drain line in the install price, since a missing one is an easy inspection fail.
What the model code says
- A storage tank water heater installed where a leak would cause damage must sit in a pan. (IRC 2021, Chapter 28)
