What condensate line means
The condensate line carries water that drips off the cooling coil, or out of a high efficiency furnace, to a drain or outside.
Also called condensate drain.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
Clogged condensate lines cause ceiling stains and water calls every summer. Clearing and treating the line is part of every cooling tune-up. A float switch that shuts the system off before the pan overflows is a cheap add on.
What the model code says
- Condensate piping must slope at least 1/8 unit in 12 toward the discharge. (IRC 2021, Chapter 14)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for condensate line before you quote.
What it costs
The aC repair cost guide has the typical job at $400 and the usual range at $210 to $640. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
