What brick veneer means
Brick veneer is a single layer of brick tied to a wood or steel framed wall with an air space behind it. It is a finish, not the structure.
Also called masonry veneer.
Where it matters on a masonry and hardscape job
Veneer depends on its air space, weeps and flashing to drain water. Blocked weeps and missing flashing are common inspection findings and repair jobs.
What the model code says
- Anchored veneer over wood or steel framing is limited to the first story above grade and no more than 5 inches thick, under this section. (IRC 2021, Chapter 7)
