What VAV box means
A VAV box is a terminal unit in a commercial duct system that varies the airflow to a zone with a motorized damper, and sometimes reheats it, to hold that zone's temperature.
Also called variable air volume box.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
You meet VAV boxes on light commercial service calls. A stuck damper or failed controller makes one office too hot while the rest are fine. Bring the controls drawings or ask for them before you quote the fix.
What it costs
Jobs that involve VAV box are priced in the ductwork replacement cost guide: about $1,250 typical, usually $450 to $2,200. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
