What HVAC zoning means
Zoning splits a house into areas with their own thermostats, using motorized dampers and a control panel on one system, or separate systems or mini-split heads.
Also called zone control, multi-zone system.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
Zoning fixes the upstairs that is always hot, but a zoned system needs a way to handle extra air when only one zone calls, or it runs at high static pressure. Design that in before you sell it.
What the model code says
- The energy code defines a zone as spaces with similar enough needs to be held at the desired conditions by one controlling device. (IRC 2021, Chapter 11)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for HVAC zoning before you quote.
