What SEER means
SEER is the seasonal energy efficiency ratio of an air conditioner or heat pump: cooling output over a season divided by the electricity used. SEER2 is the newer test version of the same idea. Higher is more efficient.
Also called SEER2, seasonal energy efficiency ratio.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
Homeowners shop by SEER, so expect to explain what a higher rating saves on their bill and what it costs up front. Federal minimums vary by region, so check the rule for the install address before you quote a unit.
What the model code says
- The energy code requires new or replacement heating and cooling equipment to meet the federal minimum efficiency for its location. (IRC 2021, Chapter 11)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for SEER before you quote.
What it costs
The central air conditioner installation cost guide has the typical job at $6,000 and the usual range at $5,000 to $14,000. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price. The seer savings calculator prices a job line by line.
