What heat pump means
A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse, moving heat into the house in winter and out in summer.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
Heat pumps are the main replacement sale in many markets now, often with rebates attached. Size them for the heating load in cold climates, and say clearly what backup heat is included.
What the model code says
- The code defines a heat pump as an appliance that uses refrigerants to pull heat from air, liquid or other sources. (IRC 2021, Chapter 2)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for heat pump before you quote.
