What Manual J means
Manual J is the ACCA method for calculating a home's heating and cooling loads room by room, from its size, insulation, windows, air leakage and climate.
Also called load calculation, heat load calc.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
Many building departments ask for a Manual J with the permit on a new system, and it is the best defense against sizing by rule of thumb. Doing one also gives you numbers to show the homeowner why the right unit is not the biggest one.
What the model code says
- Equipment must be sized with ACCA Manual S, based on loads calculated with ACCA Manual J or another approved method. (IRC 2021, Chapter 14)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for Manual J before you quote.
What it costs
