What RFI means
An RFI, or request for information, is a written question from the contractor to the designer or owner about something unclear or missing in the plans.
Also called request for information.
Where it matters on a general contracting job
RFIs create a paper trail for decisions that change cost or time. Send them in writing, number them and log the answers, so a verbal answer on site does not become your cost later.
