What live load means
Live load is the weight of people, furniture and stored things a floor, deck or roof is designed to carry, as opposed to the building's own weight.
Where it matters on a general contracting job
Hot tubs on decks and heavy storage in attics are classic live load questions. If the load is unusual, get it designed rather than guessing from the joist size.
What the model code says
- The code defines live loads as loads from the use and occupancy of the building, not including construction or environmental loads. (IRC 2021, Chapter 2)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for live load before you quote.
