What overcurrent means
Overcurrent is any current above what the equipment or wire is rated for, whether from an overload, a short circuit or a ground fault. Breakers and fuses are overcurrent protection.
Also called overcurrent protection, OCPD.
Where it matters on a electrical job
Every circuit you add needs its overcurrent device sized to the wire, not to the load the customer wishes it carried. Write the breaker size and wire gauge together on the work order.
What the model code says
- The code defines overcurrent as current above the rating of equipment or the ampacity of a conductor, from overload, short circuit or ground fault. (IRC 2021, Chapter 35)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for overcurrent before you quote.
What it costs
Jobs that involve overcurrent are priced in the electrical panel upgrade cost guide: about $2,150 typical, usually $1,300 to $3,000. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
