What NM cable means
NM cable is nonmetallic sheathed cable, the plastic jacketed bundle of insulated wires and a bare ground used for most house wiring. Romex is a brand name for it.
Also called Romex, nonmetallic sheathed cable.
Where it matters on a electrical job
NM cable is fast and cheap to run in open framing but has limits on where it can be exposed. In basements and garages, check whether it needs protection or conduit before you quote a quick run.
What the model code says
- Cables must be supported and secured by staples, listed cable ties, straps, hangers or similar fittings that do not damage the cable. (IRC 2021, Chapter 38)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for NM cable before you quote.
What it costs
The rewiring a house cost guide has the typical job at $9,150 and the usual range at $6,650 to $11,500. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
