What joist hanger means
A joist hanger is a galvanized steel bracket nailed to a ledger or beam that holds the end of a joist.
Where it matters on a deck job
Hangers only work with every hole filled by the right nail. Deck inspections find missing nails and roofing nails in hangers all the time. Use connectors and fasteners rated for treated lumber.
What the model code says
- Metal connectors on decks are G185 galvanized steel, hot-dipped galvanized per ASTM A123, or stainless steel, per the maker's spec. (IRC 2021, Chapter 5)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for joist hanger before you quote.
