What kerf means
The kerf is the width of the cut a saw blade makes, the material that turns to sawdust.
Where it matters on a carpentry job
Forgetting the kerf on a series of cuts adds up to short pieces. Kerf cuts on the back of a board also let it bend around a curve, a handy trick for curved trim.
