What butt joint means
A butt joint is the simplest joint: two pieces meeting end to end or edge to face without any interlocking cut.
Where it matters on a carpentry job
In trim, butt joints on long runs should be scarfed or placed over studs. In drywall, butt joints are the short end seams without a tapered edge, and they take more mud to hide.
