Auto Detailing profit margin benchmarks
The IRS reports what one-owner businesses filing Schedule C earn, by sector. Auto Detailing falls under Other auto repair and maintenance (including oil change, lubrication, and car washes). For tax year 2023, 122,366 returns reported $9.6 billion in receipts, $3.1 billion in cost of sales and $0.5 billion in net income less deficit (the table gives thousands of dollars):
| Benchmark | Value |
|---|---|
| Gross margin | 67.8% |
| Net margin, owner pay included | 5.5% |
| Average receipts per return | $78,797 |
| Average net income per return | $4,348 |
The owner's own draw is not an expense on a Schedule C, so that net margin is mostly the owner's wage, not profit on top of it.
Where the money goes in auto detailing
Detailing is labor, chemicals and water and power on site for mobile work. Paint correction pays more per hour than washes.
Where auto detailing margin leaks, and how to win it back
- Packages that take longer than priced on dirty cars
- Drive time for mobile jobs
- Free add-ons
- No-shows with no deposit
- Chemicals used heavily
Ways auto detailers raise margin: price by vehicle size and condition; take a deposit to cut no-shows; sell paint correction and coatings; group mobile jobs by area.
Check your auto detailing prices against the costs
We do not have sourced price ranges for auto detailing services yet, so start from your own costs with the labor rate calculator and list your prices on the services list.
Work out the margin on each line of your menu, not just the big jobs. The usual auto detailing menu: exterior wash and protect; interior detail; full detail; one-step polish; paint correction; ceramic coating; pet hair removal; headlight restoration; engine bay clean; odor treatment.
Overhead comes out of the margin before profit. In auto detailing it includes general liability insurance, which Insureon's customers who are car detailing and car wash businesses pay an average of $54 a month for; commercial auto at $46 a month on the same figures.
Work out your own margin
Put one recent auto detailing job into the calculator above, or switch it to "My margin for the year" to set your year next to the IRS benchmark. A 50% markup is a 33% margin; the markup calculator shows the rest.
