There are two kinds of leads for handymen: the ones you rent and the ones you own. Rented leads arrive the day you pay and stop the day you stop. Owned leads, from reviews, your site, past customers and referrals, take longer to build and then cost almost nothing per job. Below is where each kind comes from for handyman, with each platform's rules from its own pages.
- "Handyman" is on Google's Local Services list, so handymen can buy leads there after screening.
- Shared lead sites charge for the introduction, not the job. Measure them by cost per handyman job won.
- Buyers compare handymen, and the first clear reply wins most shared leads.
- Owned leads, like reviews, a price on your site and cards to the neighbors, keep working after you stop paying.
Where handyman leads come from
Each row is a place handyman leads come from, how it charges and our read on the fit for handymen.
| Source | Own or rent | How you pay | Fit for handymen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile and reviews | Own | Free | Where most people looking for handyman start. Reviews that mention small repairs and the town do the selling. |
| Your own site with a price | Own | Free on a Koira address | A Get a price button answers the first question about mounting a TV at any hour. |
| Past customers and referrals | Own | A text, an email, a thank-you | A seasonal home maintenance visit brings people back with no lead fee at all. |
| Neighbor postcards | Own | Per card | A fixed fence gate or a fresh patch the neighbor asked about over the fence. The homes nearby get a card with that photo the next day. |
| Google Local Services Ads | Rent | Per lead | "Handyman" is on Google's eligible list. Works best when your reviews are strong and replies are fast. |
| Angi and HomeAdvisor | Rent | Per match, win or lose | Small tickets like mounting a TV leave little room for fees on leads you do not win. |
| Thumbtack and Bark | Rent | Budget or credits | Customers often contact several handymen. The first clear price wins most of them. |
| Writing to commercial buyers | Own | Time, or Koira Front Office | One contract with property managers can replace dozens of one-time leads. |
All lead sources compared lists each platform's published prices next to Koira's, with the same columns.
Google Local Services Ads for handymen
Google lists "Handyman" among the categories eligible for Local Services Ads, so handymen can run them once they pass Google's screening. With Local Services Ads you pay for leads related to your business and services, not for clicks. Google says lead prices vary with your location, the job type, the type of lead and your bidding mode. It does not publish a price list.
Even a call you miss can be billed: Google's help page says a missed call in business hours counts when the caller waits more than 20 seconds. Google says it assesses lead quality over a 30-day period and credits leads it finds to be poor quality, duplicate or invalid.
Ranking comes down to your bid plus profile quality: rating, number of reviews, how fast you respond, photos and the verification checks you have passed. Google suggests getting 5 or more reviews, and some business types need 5 before the ad will show. For the rules in full, see Google Local Services Ads for contractors and the setup guide.
When handyman leads come in
Lead volume follows the season. For handymen it peaks around spring and the weeks before the holidays and drops in midsummer and January, which changes what a paid lead is worth from month to month.
| Month | Pace | What customers want |
|---|---|---|
| March | Get ready | Spring lists start |
| April | Busy | Spring repairs and outdoor fixes |
| May | Busy | Decks, fences and screens |
| October | Get ready | Before holiday guests |
| November | Busy | Holiday prep and lights |
Expect homeowners with a list of small jobs who want someone reliable, fairly priced and easy to book, along with property managers, small landlords and office managers and referrals from realtors, property managers and other trades who skip small jobs.
Shared lead sites and handyman
Angi's 2025 annual report describes its lead revenue as fees paid by pros for consumer matches, regardless of whether the pro ultimately provides the requested service. On Bark, the credits needed to contact a customer depend on the service, the value of the job and local supply and demand.
Thumbtack says joining is free, with no annual or membership fees. You set your own lead budget on Thumbtack, and that budget decides how many leads you get; the page shows no lead prices.
For handymen the test is simple: a lead source pays when the jobs you win from it are worth more than everything you spent on it, including the leads that went nowhere. Your customers are homeowners with a list of small jobs who want someone reliable, fairly priced and easy to book, so speed and a clear price decide most shared leads. Thumbtack vs Angi puts the two biggest side by side.
Cost per lead vs cost per handyman job
Ignore the price per lead for a moment and look at the price per booked job: a month's spend divided by the jobs that source actually produced. Then compare it with what you keep on mounting a TV or a full day working through a honey-do list. If the booked job costs more than it leaves you, the source is losing money however busy it feels.
Run your own numbers through the free cost per lead calculator; it also shows the close rate where a source breaks even. The marketing budget planner works backward from the jobs you want.
Leads you own for handymen
- Reviews. Ask everyone, right after they pay, with a link straight to the review form. Offering anything for a review, like a discount or a free service, is strictly prohibited by Google. Koira's review engine sends the ask and drafts each reply.
- A price on your site. Mounting a TV priced from your own list, day or night, with booking on the same page (instant quotes).
- The street around each job. A fixed fence gate or a fresh patch the neighbor asked about over the fence. Neighbor postcards go to the likely homes around the job the next morning.
- Referrals. From happy customers and from realtors, property managers and other trades who skip small jobs (referrals).
- Repeat work. A seasonal home maintenance visit, reminded before the season and sold on the first visit (campaigns, maintenance plans).
- Commercial buyers. Three short emails to property managers, small landlords and office managers near you, then stop (commercial outreach).
Whoever answers first
A customer comparing handymen usually books the first one who replies clearly. It does not matter whether the lead came free or cost you a fee. Koira's receptionist answers on your number and texts missed callers back in about a minute with three open times for mounting a TV or a look at a full day working through a honey-do list. Koira Grow is $249 a month plus usage at cost: texts, call minutes and emails with nothing added. See the handyman answering service guide for live and AI options and their published prices.
