A softener install is a plumbing job with a product attached. A well pump call is an emergency with a crane truck attached. Both price the same way: equipment with markup, hours, parts and trips. The difference in water treatment is the service plan after, which is where steady income comes from.
- Price the install and the service plan together, so the customer sees the yearly cost.
- Fixr puts water softener installation at $1,100 to $3,000, about $2,500 on average.
- Single-tank softeners run $650 to $1,500 installed in Fixr's guide; dual-tank $1,500 to $3,000.
- Bob Vila puts well pump installation at $942 to $2,629, about $1,785 on average.
- Weekend no-water calls need their own rate.
Setting your labor rate
Start with the wage. The closest group the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes is plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters, which is where water treatment installers are most often counted. In its May 2025 wage survey, that group's national mean wage was $34.70 an hour and the median was $30.67 (BLS OEWS 47-2152).
Add your labor burden on top: payroll taxes, workers' comp and any paid time off. If burden in your state comes to 20% of wages, a $35 an hour tech costs you $42 an hour. That loaded number is what goes into the job cost.

A worked example: a single-tank softener
Every input is an assumption for the example.
- Scope: install a single-tank softener at the main line in a basement, with a bypass, a drain line and the first bag of salt.
- Equipment: $700 from your distributor. Fittings and drain: $90.
- Time: one tech, four hours, at $42 an hour loaded.
- Driving at 76 cents a mile, the IRS business rate for the second half of 2026 (IRS standard mileage rates).
- Overhead 20% of the price and profit 15%.
- Single-tank softener from your distributor: $700
- Bypass, fittings, drain line and brine setup: $90
- Starter salt and test strips: $45
- Labor: 1 tech x 4 hours x $42 = $168
- Drive: 2 trips x 25 miles x $0.76 = $38
- Direct cost: $700 + $90 + $45 + $168 + $38 = $1,041
- Overhead plus profit: 20% + 15% = 35% of the price
- Price: $1,041 / (1 - 0.35) = $1,041 / 0.65 = $1,602
Check it: 35% of $1,602 is about $561, and $1,602 minus $561 is about $1,041, the direct cost of $1,041. The profit and overhead are inside the price, not added on top of a cost you guessed.
Fixr lists single-tank softeners at $650 to $1,500 installed and softener installs overall at $1,100 to $3,000, so $1,602 sits at the top of the single-tank range and inside the overall one. A bigger unit or a filter on the same visit is a better or best option, not a reason to cut the price.
Price the service plan
Work out a yearly visit's cost the same way: hours, parts like filters or resin cleaner, and the trip. Then decide whether salt delivery is included. The free maintenance plan pricing calculator turns that into a monthly price. On Front Office, Koira's maintenance plans bill it and book the visits.
Common water treatment pricing mistakes
- No water test. Size the system from a test, and put the result in the estimate.
- Drain and power assumed. A long drain line or a new outlet adds time.
- Well pumps priced without depth. Pump depth and pipe decide the crew and the truck.
- Plan not offered. The install is once; the plan pays every year.
