How to price garage door jobs

Most garage door calls are a broken spring or an opener that quit. Here is how to price repairs, openers and full installs so the parts and the drive are always covered.

Garage door work is mostly parts and know-how: the right spring, the right cable, the right opener, installed safely in an hour or two. That makes flat rate pricing the natural fit, built from your parts cost and your real time on each repair.

Key takeaways
  • Price repairs as flat rates: parts with your markup plus your average time at your loaded rate.
  • Fixr lists garage door repair at $150 to $350, with about $250 to replace a broken torsion spring.
  • Openers installed run $300 to $600 in Fixr's guide, around $480 for a 3/4 HP belt drive.
  • A new sectional steel door installed averages about $993, within a $700 to $2,000 range.

Start with your labor rate

Start with the wage. The closest group the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes is mechanical door repairers. In its May 2025 wage survey, that group's national mean wage was $27.67 an hour and the median was $26.79 (BLS OEWS 49-9011).

Add your labor burden on top: payroll taxes, workers' comp and any paid time off. If burden in your state comes to 20% of wages, a $27 an hour tech costs you $32.40 an hour. That loaded number is what goes into the job cost.

Fixr lists installers charging $65 to $85 an hour for custom or difficult installs, and flat rates for standard door installs: about $100 to $300 for a single door and $375 to $575 for a double (Fixr).

Price repairs as flat rates

Springs, cables, rollers, sensors and openers are the bulk of service calls. For each, take your average time, your loaded rate and the part, and set one price. Offer the pair: when one torsion spring breaks, the other is usually close.

A worked example: a torsion spring pair

Every input is an assumption for the example.

  1. Time: 1 hour on site plus 0.5 hours of drive = 1.5 hours
  2. Loaded labor: 1.5 x $32.40 = $48.60
  3. Two torsion springs and hardware at your cost: $95
  4. Drive: 20 miles x $0.76 = $15.20
  5. Direct cost: $48.60 + $95 + $15.20 = $158.80
  6. Overhead plus profit: 30% + 15% = 45% of the price
  7. Price: $158.80 / 0.55 = $289

Fixr's figure for a single broken torsion spring is about $250. A pair at $289 is a fair price for replacing both, and the customer avoids a second call next month.

Margin, not markupTo keep 35% of the price, divide your cost by 0.65. Adding 35% on top of the cost leaves you about 26%. The free profit margin calculator and markup calculator show both, step by step.

Good, better, best at the door

  • Good: replace the broken spring.
  • Better: replace both springs, new rollers and a tune-up of the track.
  • Best: the springs and rollers plus a new belt drive opener.

Common garage door pricing mistakes

  • Parts at cost. Stocking springs in every size costs money. Mark them up.
  • Single spring only. Offer the pair and let the customer choose.
  • No trip fee. A call that ends in no repair still cost you the drive.
