What rain screen means
A rain screen is a small air gap between the siding and the water resistive barrier, made with furring strips or a textured wrap. Water that gets behind the siding drains out and the wall dries.
Also called rainscreen, drainage gap.
Where it matters on a siding job
It adds material and labor, especially furring and trim extensions around windows, so price it as its own line. It is worth offering in wet climates and under fiber cement or wood siding.
