What sump pump means
A sump pump sits in a pit at the low point of a basement or crawl space and pumps out groundwater that collects there.
Where it matters on a plumbing job
Pumps fail during the storms they are needed for, so battery backups and alarms are honest add ons. Check where the discharge goes; dumping it next to the foundation sends the water back in.
What the model code says
- The code defines a sump pump as a pump that empties a sump and is used for removing storm water only. (IRC 2021, Chapter 2)
