What pressure reducing valve means
A pressure reducing valve is an adjustable valve on the main water line that lowers high street pressure to a safe level for the house.
Also called PRV, pressure regulator.
Where it matters on a plumbing job
PRVs wear out, and a failed one lets pressure creep up. Once a PRV is in, the system is closed and usually needs an expansion tank at the water heater. Quote them together.
What the model code says
- Where main pressure exceeds 80 psi, a pressure-reducing valve conforming to ASSE 1003 or CSA B356 is installed. (IRC 2021, Chapter 29)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for pressure reducing valve before you quote.
