What hose bibb means
A hose bibb is an outdoor faucet with a hose thread. A frost free hose bibb has its valve seat inside the warm wall so it does not freeze.
Also called sillcock, outdoor faucet, spigot.
Where it matters on a plumbing job
Split hose bibbs after the first freeze are a seasonal rush. A frost free replacement with a vacuum breaker is the right quote, and a fall reminder to disconnect hoses heads off the calls.
What the model code says
- Potable water outlets must be protected by an air gap, vacuum breaker, backflow assembly or a hose connection backflow preventer. (IRC 2021, Chapter 29)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for hose bibb before you quote.
What it costs
The kitchen faucet replacement cost guide has the typical job at $280 and the usual range at $160 to $380. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
