What lead-safe work practices means
Lead-safe work practices are the federal rules and methods for disturbing paint in older homes without spreading lead dust: containment, no dry sanding or open flame removal, and careful cleanup.
Also called RRP rule, lead-safe certified.
Where it matters on a painting job
Any paid work that disturbs paint in an older home covered by the EPA rule needs it, including window swaps and small repairs. Get your firm certified, keep the records, and include the setup time in the price.
The numbers, with sources
- EPA's RRP rule requires anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978 to be certified and trained in lead-safe work practices. (EPA)
- EPA says about three-quarters of US homes built before 1978 still contain some lead-based paint. (EPA)
What it costs
Jobs that involve lead-safe work practices are priced in the lead paint removal cost guide: about $9,250 typical, usually $5,750 to $18,000. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
