What continuous insulation means
Continuous insulation is a layer of insulation that runs unbroken across studs and framing, usually foam or mineral wool board on the outside of the sheathing.
Also called ci, exterior insulation.
Where it matters on a insulation job
It stops heat from short circuiting through studs and is required in some climate zones by the energy code. It thickens the wall, so windows, doors and trim details change. Plan those before you quote.
What the model code says
- The energy code defines continuous insulation as insulation that runs across all structural members without thermal bridges other than fasteners and service openings. (IRC 2021, Chapter 11)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for continuous insulation before you quote.
