What refrigerant means
Refrigerant is the fluid that absorbs heat inside the house and releases it outside as it is compressed, condensed and evaporated in a cooling or heat pump system.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
Refrigerant handling is regulated, and the types allowed in new equipment have been changing. Price refrigerant by the pound on repair calls and tell the customer when a leak, not the gas, is the real problem.
What the model code says
- Refrigerants in direct refrigerating systems must conform to ANSI/ASHRAE 34. (IRC 2021, Chapter 14)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for refrigerant before you quote.
What it costs
Jobs that involve refrigerant are priced in the aC repair cost guide: about $400 typical, usually $210 to $640. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price. The refrigeration btu calculator prices a job line by line.
