What load-bearing wall means
A load-bearing wall carries weight from the roof or floors above down to the foundation. Removing or opening it needs a beam and posts sized to carry that load.
Also called bearing wall, structural wall.
Where it matters on a general contracting job
Open concept remodels live and die on this. Confirm bearing before quoting, and include the engineer, temporary shoring, beam and permit in the price, not as surprises.
