What hardwood refinishing means
Refinishing is sanding a wood floor down to bare wood and applying new stain and finish. A screen and recoat only scuffs the top coat and adds a new one.
Also called sand and refinish, screen and recoat.
Where it matters on a flooring job
Screen and recoat is cheaper and faster but only works when the wear is in the finish, not the wood. Telling the customer which one their floor needs, honestly, earns repeat work.
