The short version

  • Construction Supervisors have the highest national median of the 14 trades, $38.42 an hour ($79,920 a year). House Cleaners have the lowest, $17.07.
  • Where you work matters as much as the trade. For sheet metal workers, the median runs from $22.03 in Arkansas to $47.38 in Washington.
  • These are wages paid to employees on a payroll. Owner-operators are not counted, and a business has to charge well above the wage to cover taxes, time off, unbilled hours, overhead and profit. The labor rate calculator does that math.

How this report is made

Every figure is a cell from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics files for May 2025: the state file and the national file, across all industries, for one standard occupation code per trade. BLS holds back a figure when its sample is too small; those cells read "Not published" here and are empty in the CSV, never estimated.

Some BLS groups are wider than the trade name: plumbers include pipefitters and steamfitters, house cleaners are filed with hotel and hospital housekeeping. Each trade's salary page says what its group covers.
