What pipe dope means
Pipe dope is paste thread sealant brushed on tapered pipe threads to seal the joint. Tape does the same job in a different form.
Also called thread sealant, pipe joint compound, Teflon tape.
Where it matters on a plumbing job
Gas fittings need a sealant rated for gas. Using the wrong one, or putting sealant on a flare or compression fitting, causes leaks and failed tests.
