What return air means
Return air is the air pulled back from the rooms to the equipment to be heated or cooled again, through return grilles and ducts.
Also called return duct, return grille.
Where it matters on a HVAC job
Too little return is one of the most common duct faults, and it shows up as high static pressure and a noisy unit. Adding a return is often cheaper than it sounds and fixes more than a bigger unit would.
What the model code says
- The code defines return air as air removed from a conditioned space and recirculated or exhausted. (IRC 2021, Chapter 2)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for return air before you quote.
What it costs
Jobs that involve return air are priced in the ductwork replacement cost guide: about $1,250 typical, usually $450 to $2,200. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price. The duct size calculator prices a job line by line.
