- Utah requires a state contractor license with the H100 HVAC classification, issued by the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL).
- The qualifier needs 4,000 hours of HVAC employment in the past 5 years, shown by W-2s, K-1s or tax returns (DOPL describes it as two years of HVAC experience). An active Utah journeyman or master plumber license can stand in.
- Plan for two exams: the trade exam and a business and law exam.
- Pay runs from about $18.06 an hour for the lowest-paid tenth of HVAC technicians to $38.70 for the top tenth.
- Jobs are projected to grow 34.3% from 2022 to 2032, faster than the 5.5% projected nationally.

- Pass the Utah Business and Law exam and the H100 trade exam through Prov.
- Register your business, get $1M/$2M liability insurance and workers comp or a waiver.
- Apply to DOPL for the H100 classification and pay the fees.

Finding an apprenticeship in Utah
Utah has no recognized State Apprenticeship Agency, so the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship registers and oversees programs there through a state field office. Apprenticeship.gov lists the Utah Apprenticeship Office as the contact.
Either way, a registered program means paid work with a mentor, raises as you progress, classroom instruction and a credential recognized in every state. Search open spots in the Apprenticeship Job Finder.
Across the country. Some technicians train through an apprenticeship, which usually lasts several years. Each year mixes paid on-the-job training with some classroom work on safety, blueprint reading, and heating and cooling systems.
License levels and exams in Utah
The license to aim for: Contractor license, H100 HVAC Contractor.
Trade exam. Yes. The H100 HVAC written trade exam, given by Prov. The qualifier must also be a certified natural gas technician (RMGA or equivalent), unless they hold a qualifying master plumber license.
Business exam. Yes. The Utah Business and Law exam through Prov, plus a 25-hour pre-license course. An extra 5-hour business and law course applies to general classifications.
Keeping it. Every two years. Licenses expire November 30 of odd years. You need 6 hours of continuing education, 3 of them live (live webinars count).
Coming from another state. Utah has no reciprocity. It offers licensure by endorsement instead, but the H100 extra requirements cannot be waived that way.
