The path in Oklahoma, step by step
Oklahoma licenses HVAC work at the state level through the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB). These are the steps it lays out, in order.
- Register as a mechanical apprentice with the CIB and log your hours under a licensed contractor.
- Once you have three years of verifiable work (or approved school plus work), apply for a journeyman license in your category.
- Pass the journeyman trade exam with the board's testing vendor.
- After one more year in the trade, apply for the mechanical contractor license and pay the $30 application fee.
- Pass both the business and law and the trade portions of the contractor exam.
- File the $5,000 surety bond and a certificate showing $50,000 of general liability insurance to activate the license.

Finding an apprenticeship in Oklahoma
Oklahoma has no recognized State Apprenticeship Agency, so the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship registers and oversees programs there through a state field office. Apprenticeship.gov lists the Oklahoma Apprenticeship Office as the contact.
Either way, a registered program means paid work with a mentor, raises as you progress, classroom instruction and a credential recognized in every state. Search open spots in the Apprenticeship Job Finder.
Across the country. Some technicians train through an apprenticeship, which usually lasts several years. Each year mixes paid on-the-job training with some classroom work on safety, blueprint reading, and heating and cooling systems.
