- Log 6,000 hours as a licensed apprentice and finish 450 hours of approved schooling.
- Apply for the Refrigeration Technician license ($75) with your Universal CFC certification, then pass the exam.
- To run your own shop, finish 100 more hours of approved training, then apply for the Refrigeration Contractor license ($150) and pass that exam.
- Get a separate gas fitter or sheet metal license if you do that work.
- Renew by your birthday about every two years.

Finding an apprenticeship in Massachusetts
Massachusetts runs Registered Apprenticeship through its own State Apprenticeship Agency, recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor to register and oversee programs there. Its staff are state employees, and it may use the federal paperwork or forms of its own. Apprenticeship.gov lists the Massachusetts State Apprenticeship Agency as the contact.
Either way, a registered program means paid work with a mentor, raises as you progress, classroom instruction and a credential recognized in every state. Search open spots in the Apprenticeship Job Finder.
Across the country. Some technicians train through an apprenticeship, which usually lasts several years. Each year mixes paid on-the-job training with some classroom work on safety, blueprint reading, and heating and cooling systems.
License levels and exams in Massachusetts
The license to aim for: Refrigeration Contractor license (with a Refrigeration Technician license for the hands on work).
Trade exam. Yes. After the bureau approves your application, the Office of Public Safety and Inspections gives the refrigeration technician or refrigeration contractor exam. Sheet metal and gas fitter licenses have their own state exams.
Keeping it. Refrigeration licenses renew about every two years and expire on the licensee's birthday. A license not renewed for a year can only be reinstated by passing the exam again. Apprentice licenses can be renewed only twice unless the bureau approves more.
Coming from another state. A refrigeration technician license from another jurisdiction, with equivalent work experience, can stand in for the Massachusetts hours if the bureau approves it by majority vote.
